New Winemaking Head for Cockatoo Ridge

Publicly listed Cockatoo Ridge Wines has appointed a renowned Australian winemaker with extensive international experience to head its wine production operations.

Mr Roger Harbord brings 30 years of wine making experience to Cockatoo Ridge and, as Chief Winemaker, has been commissioned to further enhance the reputation and quality of the wines in the Cockatoo Ridge portfolio.

Backed by a Science Degree from Adelaide University and an Oenology Degree from the Roseworthy Agricultural College, Mr Harbord worked in Europe and the United States before joining Quelltaler (now Annie’s Lane) Winery in the Clare Valley as a winemaker in 1980 when it was owned by giant French company, Remy Martin.

In 1987 he moved to the Barossa Valley as winemaker for Basedow Wines before becoming Chief Winemaker at Cellarmaster Wines in 1992, overseeing the production of one million cases of wine each year.

In 1996 Roger Harbord became Chief Winemaker at Normans Wines, which is today under the Cockatoo Ridge umbrella, before establishing his own small winery (Harbord Wines) in 2000 while also consulting to wine companies in Coonawarra and the Barossa Valley.

Commenting today, Cockatoo Ridge Managing Director, Mr Peter Perrin said: “Roger Harbord brings to Cockatoo Ridge considerable experience in premium winemaking, along with his proven ability to handle large volume wine operations.

“His input for the 2008 vintage has been significant and best illustrates the specialist expertise and additional skills he has brought to Cockatoo Ridge Wines.”
